Andrew Mendelson, PhD

Andrew is an expert in journalism and communications curriculum and training. He has designed assessment tools to help better understand whether curricular goals are being met. He has also trained legions of teachers and trainers on effective teaching methods. Andrew specializes in curriculum development for Webbmedia Group.

Andrew is an associate professor in and chair of the department of journalism in the School of Communications and Theater at Temple University. During the past 13 years as a professor, he has designed more than 15 courses -- seminars, prerequisites, and large-lecture series -- for first year to doctoral students and from large-lecture to seminars.

He has innovated multiple new programs and capstones and solidified cross-department partnerships, combining journalism with computer science, public health and urban studies.

In addition to curriculum design and implementation, Andrew has also created assessment tools to help better understand whether curricular goals are being met. These tools include student surveys, standardized syllabi and exams, and external evaluation of senior projects. At Temple University, he has also served as the point person for a university-mandated program review and the journalism department’s accreditation reviews.

Andrew has been widely published in leading communications journals, including Journal of Communication, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism History, Journalism Studies, Journalism and Visual Studies. Among the awards and recognitions he has received are: selection as the 2003 Visual Educator Fellow at the National Geographic Magazine; selection for the 2006 and 2009 Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academies; winning the 2005 School of Communications and Theater Distinguished Teaching Award for a Junior Faculty Member; and winning a 2010 Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, a university-wide recognition.
